Post-Construction Essentials: The Cleanup Checklist That Every Crew Should Have

Construction projects leave a lot of mess behind, and post-construction cleanup is perhaps one of the least favorite tasks for contractors. Many contractors use the services of an outsourced cleanup crew, but D & J Site Construction likes its functions vertically integrated to maximize efficiency & deliver on time.

The secret is to keep a post-construction cleanup checklist that includes everything from lot clearing, paving, and pavement repair to haul-off. Various tools & equipment are involved to ensure the client arrives at a completed & clean site.

Why Even Use A Checklist?

For the same reason, you need a shopping list to get all the items you need in one trip!

A post-construction cleaning checklist acts as a guide to preparing a site for the final presentation to the shareholders. The list usually includes the equipment required, the areas that need sprucing up, & the cleaning required. It’s done in advance as per the nature of the construction project.

Since D & J Site Construction specializes in paving, site work, & demolition, it goes without saying that a microfiber cloth won’t cut it!

The Cleanup Checklist Overview

Stage 1: Rough Cleaning

Any relevant hazard signs are deployed to ensure site safety first. The rough stage entails collecting large debris & disposal units or dumpsters used for the collection of any demolished material or leftover paving aggregates. Street sweepers sweep over the completed site to clear off rough paving chips & sub-course material lying about on the finished asphalt’s surface.

Stage 2: Proper Clean

During stage 2, any excess asphalt drips, mud, & muck is scraped off using a blade & loose sand is blown off using a leaf blower. If need be, industrial sweepers might be required to enhance the aesthetics of the pavement. If it is a demolition project, then, after the heavy equipment & dumpsters have cleared off, the site gets cleared, leveled & graded into a lot. Front-loaders may be required for raking the ground of any vegetation, & then water is sprayed over to settle the dust.

Owing to freshly compacted asphalt’s vulnerability to water intrusion & potential for damage, a pressure wash or anything water-related is best avoided.

Stage 3: Touch Up

A few days after the proper site cleaning, the construction crew inspects the site again for any spots missed that might hold hazardous debris or asphalt splats. It is to get rid of any of the last remaining dirt & debris on the pavement & adjoining constructed elements like sidewalks, gutters, & curbs. Shovels are usually used for this task.

The cleaning helps eliminate any leftover paint stripe splatter or excess bitumen stains. The touch-up ensures the commercial or residential premises have a picture-perfect face post-construction.
