Nothing is more visually cathartic than moss-covered granite curbs glistening in the sun after a spring shower. But what if the boredom gets to you? Would you invest in granite again, or would you go for concrete curbs?
D&J Site Construction LLC weighs the advantages of both materials to make your pavement curbing upgrade suit your style!
Granite curbing is the only permeable form of curbing, meaning it’s allowed to “breathe” when water hits it. That means no damage from freeze-thaw cycles in northern climates and virtually no need for repairs after every winter season!
Concrete curbing, while visually aesthetic, is an inferior option that affords little protection from freeze-thaw damage. It is permeable too, but that is also its vulnerability. The material also breaks down in the sun, bleaches out, and even ravels.
Upfront, granite, a natural rock that needs to be worked to size, proves an expensive curbing option. But long term, owing to its resistance to erosion & spalling damage, the rock proves a more economical material.
Concrete has far more attractive upfront costs, but what it makes up for the immediate economy it lacks in low upkeep costs. If your parking lot pavement has concrete curbs, they will require you to set aside a hefty amount for maintenance alone each season.
Granite is 100% reusable, is a green material, and can be repurposed into several landscape & hardscape applications. Its extraction has no repercussions on the environment in terms of carbon emissions.
On the other hand, Concrete has high carbon emissions during its production, which makes it even less green than asphalt pavement! And once curbs are unusable due to damage, they can’t be recycled and often go into landfills, where they leach curing additives into the soil.
Curbs, in general, are intended to provide tensile strength across the pavement’s sides, plus they act as edges for drainage swales. Since granite curbs are not too susceptible to damage, are dense, and stable, they have a significantly higher positive reinforcing impact on the pavement edges.
Concrete curbs are equally strong at reinforcing pavement edges, especially flexible pavement, but they are limited by their relatively short service life & vulnerability to weather cycles.
Curbs are not restricted to just pavement, driveways, & parking lots. They come in sizes for municipal, residential, & commercial garden curbing. Granite comes in natural, earthy hues that adds a premium look to landscapes, guaranteed to enhance the property’s ROI. And it lasts over a lifetime without eroding!
Concrete can be stained, poured, & textured to mimic a range of natural stones for aesthetic & decorative curbs. This is a significant plus point for landscape artists, paving contractors, & civil engineers when it comes to adding oomph to a freshly minted pavement.
What’s The Verdict?
While granite has many technical advantages over concrete curbs in terms of durability, strength, reusability, & low-maintenance costs, it might lose out to concrete over grounds of varied aesthetics & low-upfront costs.
One may see concrete’s vulnerability to the elements as high-maintenance costs; another can see it as an opportunity to upgrade their residential & commercial curbing to suit trending styles.
